The meat pies were first known to made somewhere around 9500 BC. The ancient Egyptians' ate pies made from oat, wheat, rye, and barley, and filled with honey and baked over hot coals. The ancient Greeks developed a flour and water paste that resembled modern pie pastry which was filled with meat, which were then fried or cooked under coals. The Romans used a variety of pie fillings in their pies, like oysters, mussels, lampreys, and fish. In medieval Northern Europe, lard and butter were used in the pie dough and were called coffins, with magpie as the main ingredient, giving pies their current name. There are many varieties of meat pie, including British meat pies, French-Canadian meat pies, and the Australia and NZ meat pie. An Irish meat pie is filled with steak and Guinness. Nigerian meat pies can be baked or fried, and the filling can be almost anything from corned beef to just onions and tomatoes. In the Middle East, meat pies are called sfiha and contain ground beef, olive oil, plain yogurt, tahini, allspice, onion, tomatoes and pine nuts. Meat pies in Greece are known as kreatopita, containing ground beef, onions and feta cheese.
